“Let other women pursue heedlessly what they perceive as their selfish interests. You can be a much needed force for love and truth and righteousness on this planet.”

OBJECTIVE: This class will be a panel of three Amazing Women - Sonya, Johnston, Ginger Daines, and Kathy Knudsen.  They will share wisdom that they have gained over a lifetime on what really matters in life and how they came to that conclusion.  There will also be a question and answer period - FANTASTIC!!!!

Sonja Johnston

Sonya Johnston was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in the Montclair area.  There were two sisters in her family, one older, Marsha, and an identical twin Debra.

When Debra and Sonya were growing up they attended a lot of different churches.  While in high school their senior year they became friends with a girl named Becky Nicol.  She was a wonderful example to everyone that knew her and when she sent two missionaries to our door we listened because of our respect for her.

In 1973 Sonya met her husband Gary at a young adult dance on Halloween.  They were married in the Los Angeles Temple and welcomed their first child Joyel on Halloween 1975.  Joyel was followed by two brothers (Cameron and Spencer).  Gary and Sonya currently have 14 grandchildren.

Sonya went back to college when her children were in school and earned her BA in child development, a teaching credential, and a Masters of Arts in teaching.  For over 30 years she taught in Los Angeles unified mainly 4-6th grades.  In June 2017 she retired from teaching.

Her church callings have been in Primary, Relief Society and Young Women's.  She is currently 2nd counselor in the Stake Primary Presidency.

Her hobbies are reading (she loves reading history, and is currently reading about the civil war).  She also has read every Newberry Medal winner.  She loves gardening and walking in beautiful gardens.  She does postcrossing which connects you with people around the world.
